The Bakota, also Kota, people of Congo and Gabon traditionally placed these guardians, called Mbulu Ngulu, atop baskets containing the bones of revered ancestors to guard the remains from malicious spirits or people. The figures are carved of wood and covered with intricately woven strips of copper, brass, and bronze.
