The Bakota, also Kota, people of Congo and Gabon traditionally placed guardians, called Mbulu Ngulu, atop baskets containing the bones of revered ancestors to guard the remains from malicious spirits or people. Reliquary figures are typically carved of wood and covered with intricately woven strips of copper, brass, and bronze.
