This African Mask from the Babanki people of Cameroon measures 36 inches tall, 11 inches wide and is hand-carved of wood. The elephant is a royal animal in Babanki tradition and these masks may be worn only by privileged members of the community on special occasions such as dances, festivals, and funerals. The movements of dancers wearing the elephant mask are slow and majestic, imitating the elephant itself and befitting his dignity.
